Class 12 students should prepare for the board exam and JEE Main Maths together, chapter by chapter — not boards first and JEE later. The two papers share most of their syllabus but reward different things: the board paper rewards a complete written answer, JEE rewards the right number, fast. Teaching each chapter for both in the same week is what makes the year work.
Why boards matter for JEE too
Board marks are not just a school matter. To be admitted to an IIT or NIT through JoSAA, a student needs at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of their board. A strong JEE score with a weak board result can still close doors.
The year, month by month
April to July
Teach the Class 12 chapters in order, each one twice in the same week: once as a board answer, once as a JEE problem. Calculus — limits, continuity, differentiation and integration — takes the most time and carries the most marks in both papers.
August to October
Finish the syllabus and revise Class 11 alongside it. Most Class 12 trouble traces back to a Class 11 chapter, especially functions, trigonometry and coordinate geometry.
November to December
Full JEE Main papers under time, plus CBSE sample papers. Keep an error log: every wrong answer goes into a notebook with the reason.
January
In recent years NTA has held JEE Main in two sessions, in January and in April. The January attempt is a real attempt and also the best possible mock.
February to March
Board exams. CBSE Class 12 Maths is 80 marks of theory plus 20 of internal assessment, and competency-based questions now make up a large part of the paper.
April
The second JEE Main session — a chance to improve with the board exam behind you. JEE Advanced follows for students in the top 2,50,000.

Ask on WhatsAppHow a home tutor helps in Class 12
The hardest part of Class 12 is not any single chapter — it is keeping two exams moving at once without falling behind in either. A one-to-one tutor can hold that plan, adjust it after every test, and go back to Class 11 when a gap shows. That is how our Class 12 Maths home tuition in Gurgaon works, at home across Gurgaon or online. The Class 12 Maths guide lists the full syllabus.
Questions parents ask
Should my child skip JEE Main in January to focus on boards?
Usually not. The January session is a real attempt with a second chance in April, and the preparation overlaps heavily with the board syllabus.
How many Maths sessions a week does Class 12 need?
Most families take two to three sessions of about 90 minutes. Closer to the exams, time shifts from new chapters to full papers.
My child started JEE late — is it too late in Class 12?
No, but the plan has to be tight. See when to start JEE Maths and the 90-day JEE Main Maths plan.
