Why Mathematics decides IIT JEE results

Every IIT JEE aspirant studies all three subjects, and almost nobody is equally strong in all three. Ranks are decided by the weakest one.

Mathematics carries a third of the marks in JEE Main and a third in JEE Advanced, and the same chapters are examined again in the board papers and in BITSAT. A student who is genuinely strong here has margin everywhere; one who is not spends the last six months trying to rescue a subject while two others go quiet.

The pattern we see most often is not a student who cannot do Mathematics. It is a student who was taught it as a set of procedures, did well while the questions stayed familiar, and stalled the moment the exam asked them to apply something in a form they had not seen. That is a teaching problem, not an ability problem, and it is fixable — but only by going back to the chapter where it started rather than pushing forward.

That is the case for one-to-one teaching in this subject specifically. In a batch, nobody finds out where a student's understanding actually stops.

Planning Mathematics across two years

The chapters that decide Mathematics are spread across Class 11 and Class 12, and the exams do not respect that split — a JEE paper asks Class 11 material and Class 12 material in the same question.

Class 11 is the foundation year, and its weaknesses are invisible at the time. School exams reward reproducing a method, so a student can score well and still be unable to attempt a JEE question on the same chapter. Finding that gap early is most of what a tutor is for in the first year.

Class 12 is a scheduling year. Boards and JEE fall within weeks of each other and share most of a syllabus, so the sensible approach teaches each chapter twice over — once for the written board answer and once for the JEE problem — rather than preparing for one and then starting the other.

By the final months the work changes character entirely: no new chapters, full papers under time, and a fortnightly review of the questions being got wrong. Very little of that is about learning more Mathematics. Most of it is about converting what a student already knows into marks.

What one-to-one Mathematics teaching changes

  • The pace follows one student. A chapter that lands in twenty minutes takes twenty minutes; one that does not gets the week it needs.
  • Gaps get found. A tutor watching a student attempt a problem sees where the reasoning stops — something no test score reports and no batch of forty reveals.
  • Going back is possible. Most Mathematics difficulties trace to an earlier chapter, and a one-to-one tutor can spend a fortnight there. A class cannot.
  • The plan changes on Tuesday. If a school test or a coaching module knocks the week sideways, the schedule moves with it instead of falling behind it.
  • Questions get asked. Students who will not raise a hand in a batch will admit to a tutor sitting next to them that they never understood something from last year — which is usually the sentence that fixes the problem.

The JEE Main paper, and how it is marked

JEE Main Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech is a three-hour computer-based paper of 75 questions carrying 300 marks. Each of the three subjects contributes 25 questions — 20 multiple-choice and 5 numerical-value questions where the answer is typed in rather than chosen.

The change worth knowing about: until 2024 a student picked any 5 of 10 questions in the numerical section. From 2025 all 5 are compulsory, so there is no longer a weak chapter you can sidestep. Numerical answers are rounded to the nearest integer.

Marking is +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, with nothing deducted for a question left untouched. Negative marking applies to the numerical section too. That single rule shapes how a good tutor teaches JEE Main: a student who guesses four borderline questions and gets one right has gained nothing at all.

The JEE Advanced paper, and how it is marked

JEE Advanced is two compulsory computer-based papers, three hours each, taken on the same day. Each paper carries 180 marks across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, for 360 in total.

The part that catches students out is that the exam does not publish its own structure in advance. The number of questions, the total marks and the marking rules appear on screen only when the paper opens. Recent years have totalled 306, 360 and 372 marks — all different. A student who has rehearsed one fixed pattern is rattled in the first five minutes.

Question types rotate through single-correct multiple choice, multiple-correct answers, numerical value entry, and matching. Multiple-correct questions usually carry partial marking, which makes "how many options am I sure of" a scoring decision rather than a guess. Preparing for JEE Advanced means preparing for a paper whose shape you will not know until you see it.

The BITSAT paper, and how it is marked

BITSAT is 130 questions in three hours, for 390 marks, taken online. Physics has 30 questions, Chemistry 30, Mathematics 40, and the remaining 30 come from English Proficiency (10) and Logical Reasoning (20) — the two parts most JEE students have never practised.

Marking is +3 for correct and −1 for wrong. Every question is objective with a single correct option; there is no numerical entry section.

The feature that makes BITSAT unlike any other engineering entrance: a student who answers all 130 questions before time runs out is offered 12 extra questions — three each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Logical Reasoning. They can only add marks. This turns speed into a scoring strategy rather than just a safeguard, and it is the single biggest thing a BITSAT tutor should be drilling, because a student who finishes with fifteen minutes spare is playing a different exam from one who does not.

What Class 11 actually decides

Class 11 has no board exam, which is exactly why it is the year that quietly decides a JEE result. Roughly half of everything asked in JEE Main and JEE Advanced comes from the Class 11 syllabus, and it is the half that everything in Class 12 is built on.

The pattern of the year is school assessments — unit tests, half-yearlies, an annual exam — none of which resemble a JEE paper. A student can score 90% in school and still be unable to attempt a JEE question on the same chapter, because school papers reward reproducing a derivation and JEE rewards applying it to a situation the student has not seen.

That gap is the whole job in Class 11. A tutor working properly here is teaching both papers at once: the school syllabus at the depth the school wants, and the same chapters again at the depth JEE will want two years later.

The board paper, and the JEE paper, in the same year

Class 12 is the year both exams land together. For CBSE, Physics and Chemistry are 70 marks of theory plus 30 of practical; Mathematics is 80 marks of theory plus 20 of internal assessment.

CBSE has been steadily moving away from memory. Competency-based questions — case studies, source-based and applied multiple choice — now make up around half the paper, up from 40% a few years ago, with roughly a fifth as straight objective questions and the rest as written answers. That shift narrows the distance between the board paper and a JEE paper, which helps a student preparing for both.

It does not close it. Boards still reward a complete, well-presented answer; JEE rewards the right number, fast, with a penalty for a wrong one. A student who prepares only one way loses marks in the other. Planning the year so neither exam is prepared for at the last minute is the most valuable thing a Class 12 tutor does.
