JEE Main Maths: a 90-day plan to lift a weak score

When Maths is pulling the JEE Main score down, three months is enough to change it — if the time goes to the right chapters and to accuracy. A plan Gurgaon parents can check week by week.

Ninety days is enough to lift a weak JEE Main Maths score, but only if the first month goes to finding and fixing gaps, the second to the chapters that carry the most marks, and the third to timed papers and accuracy. Most students spend all three months on new questions, which is why their score barely moves.

How the Maths section is marked

JEE Main has 25 Maths questions: 20 multiple choice and 5 numerical, all compulsory. Each is worth +4 if right and −1 if wrong. So a careless mistake does not just lose four marks — it costs five compared with a correct answer. Cutting errors is often the fastest score gain available.

Hand-drawn 90-day JEE Main Maths plan in three boxes: days 1 to 30 find the gaps with a diagnostic paper and fix Class 11 basics, days 31 to 60 high-weight chapters like calculus, coordinate geometry and algebra, days 61 to 90 timed papers and an error log, with a rising score line
Gaps first, then the chapters that carry the marks, then accuracy under time.

Days 1–30: find the gaps

Start with a full diagnostic paper under exam conditions, then sort every mistake into one of three kinds: did not know the method, knew it but chose wrong, or knew it and made a careless error. Each kind needs a different fix. Most weak Maths scores trace back to a few Class 11 chapters — functions, trigonometry, quadratic equations, sequences and series.

Days 31–60: the chapters that carry the marks

Calculus and coordinate geometry carry the most marks across the paper, and vectors and 3D geometry give the fastest marks per hour of study. Spend this month there, chapter by chapter, with a short timed test at the end of each one. The JEE Main Maths guide shows where the marks sit.

Days 61–90: timed papers and an error log

Two or three full papers a week, each followed by a review of every wrong answer. Keep an error log with the reason for each mistake, and read it before the next paper. Practise question selection: in a three-hour paper, the order in which questions are attempted changes the score.

What a tutor adds to this plan

Students can follow a plan alone, but most cannot diagnose their own mistakes honestly — a wrong method and a careless slip look the same from the inside. A one-to-one tutor reads the working, sorts the errors and adjusts the plan each week. That is the core of our JEE Main Maths home tuition in Gurgaon, at home in areas like Sector 56 and across the city, or online.

Questions parents ask

Is 90 days really enough?

To lift a weak Maths score, yes, if the student studies consistently and the time goes to the right chapters. To move from average to top-rank level, plan for longer.

Should my child guess when unsure?

With −1 for a wrong answer, blind guessing loses marks on average. An educated guess after eliminating options is different — a tutor can show when it is worth it.

How many sessions a week with a tutor?

Usually two to three sessions of about 90 minutes, plus papers the student sits alone.

What if the board exams are also coming up?

Then the plan has to carry both. See Class 12 boards and JEE Main Maths together.
